WhatsApp to Stop Working on These Phones Soon – Is Yours on the List?

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is set to end support for several older smartphones in the coming months, potentially leaving millions of users without access to the app. As part of its regular updates, WhatsApp is phasing out compatibility with outdated operating systems, encouraging users to upgrade to newer devices for security and performance reasons.

Why Is WhatsApp Ending Support?

WhatsApp frequently updates its platform to enhance security, introduce new features, and maintain app performance. However, older devices with outdated operating systems may no longer be compatible with these updates, making it necessary for WhatsApp to discontinue support.

Operating Systems Affected

From 2024, WhatsApp will no longer function on devices running:

  • Android versions below 5.0 (Lollipop)
  • iOS versions below 12
  • Some older versions of KaiOS below 2.5.0, including certain models like JioPhone and JioPhone 2.

List of Devices Losing Support

Some of the popular devices that may no longer support WhatsApp include:

  • Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, S4, S5
  • iPhone 5, 5C, and older models
  • Sony Xperia M, Z1, Z2
  • LG Optimus F7, F5
  • HTC Desire 500
  • Huawei Ascend Mate and Ascend D2

For a complete list, users should visit the official WhatsApp support page.

How to Check Your Device’s Compatibility

To ensure WhatsApp continues to work:

  1. Android Users:
    • Go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information to check your Android version.
  2. iPhone Users:
    • Navigate to Settings > General > About to view your iOS version.
  3. Update Your Device:
    • If your phone is compatible with a newer OS version, update it to continue using WhatsApp.

What Should You Do If Your Phone Is Unsupported?

If your phone is on the list of unsupported devices:

  • Consider upgrading to a newer smartphone that meets WhatsApp’s requirements.
  • Back up your chat history to avoid losing important messages. You can do this through Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
