Punjab College Rape Controversy: Protests, Conflicting Reports, and Ongoing Investigations in Lahore

The bustling city of Lahore, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, has been at the center of national and international attention recently. Students from Punjab College in Lahore have taken to the streets in large numbers after reports of an alleged rape on campus began circulating online, sparking outrage and confusion. The incident, surrounded by conflicting narratives and political undertones, has left the public grappling with questions about safety, justice, and the role of media in such sensitive cases.

Protests Erupt Following Allegations

It all began when social media erupted with claims that a female student at Punjab College for Women had been raped by a security guard in the campus basement. The alleged incident was said to have taken place either on Thursday or Friday, according to varying reports. The tension heightened as students organized protests across multiple campuses, demanding swift justice for the victim and greater safety measures for students.

On Monday, the protests intensified, with at least 28 students reportedly injured in clashes with the police. The demonstrators called for an immediate investigation into the incident, which they believed had been mishandled or even covered up by the college administration.

Despite the uproar, the college maintained that no official complaint had been lodged, and no student had come forward as the victim. College authorities, as well as local police, initially dismissed the claims as rumors fueled by social media. However, as pressure mounted, the authorities began investigating, placing a security guard in custody.

Conflicting Statements and Media Storm

By Tuesday, the controversy had escalated, with conflicting reports from various officials and parties involved. The police called for anyone with credible information to step forward, while Punjab College’s administration claimed that CCTV footage revealed no such incident had occurred. The Director of Punjab Group of Colleges, Agha Tahir Ijaz, publicly stated that no incident had been reported, despite allegations circulating online.

In the meantime, the Progressive Students Collective, a student group leading the protests, demanded a thorough investigation not only into the alleged rape but also into the police’s heavy-handed response to student demonstrations. They called for the involvement of independent human rights organizations, student representatives, and judicial oversight to ensure transparency.

Maryam Nawaz: A Conspiracy Unfolds?

Amid the uproar, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz held a press conference, where she claimed the entire incident was part of a politically motivated conspiracy. According to Nawaz, the story was fabricated by political opponents in an effort to discredit the government during a sensitive time, including the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. She emphasized that the “victim” had been hospitalized well before the alleged incident due to a serious fall, and her name was being exploited for propaganda purposes.

Nawaz accused the opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), of orchestrating the protests and spreading false information. She backed her statements by sharing details of the investigation, including CCTV footage that she claimed disproved the accusations. Nawaz vowed to take action against those who spread the fake news, including journalists and political figures.

Student Voices and Public Outcry

Despite the official narrative, students at Punjab College and other concerned citizens remain unsatisfied. Many continue to stand by the alleged victim, claiming that her story is being buried by the authorities. Protesters insist that the administration has failed to provide a safe environment for students and that those who raised their voices in solidarity with the victim have faced retaliation in the form of threats and physical violence.

Several students involved in the protests shared stories of being beaten by security guards and police personnel. One student even showed journalists her bloodstained clothes, claiming she was attacked during the demonstration. Students further alleged that the college principal had deleted CCTV footage to hide the truth.

Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, voiced his support for the students, asserting that they had the right to demand justice. He warned the college administration not to retaliate against the protesters and expressed his determination to ensure accountability.

A Case of Miscommunication or Something More?

As of now, the police have yet to file any official case as they are still searching for the alleged victim. Meanwhile, both the Punjab College administration and Lahore police have maintained that no such incident has occurred, terming it a rumor spread through social media.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran addressed the press, likening the case to other instances of unrest fueled by misinformation on social platforms. He warned that action would be taken against those spreading false information under Pakistan’s Cyber Crime Act.

Despite these statements, protesters continue to call for justice and safety, insisting that until transparency and fairness are ensured, their demonstrations will not cease.

What’s Next?

As investigations proceed and the situation continues to evolve, the public remains deeply divided over the truth behind the alleged rape case. Was it a tragic incident that was covered up? Or was it, as some officials claim, a politically motivated conspiracy? Only time—and a thorough investigation—will reveal the full story. In the meantime, one thing is certain: the students of Lahore will continue to raise their voices until they are satisfied that justice has been served.

The case of the alleged rape at Punjab College has sparked significant outrage, protests, and media coverage. With emotions running high, it is vital that investigations are handled transparently and that the voices of students and the public are heard. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether this is a case of gross injustice or political manipulation. One thing remains clear: the demand for accountability and safety on college campuses is now louder than ever before.
