Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Strategic Vision for IT Sector Growth

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has laid out an ambitious roadmap to transform Pakistan’s Information Technology (IT) sector into a global powerhouse, targeting a remarkable $25 billion in IT exports over the next five years. Chairing a series of high-level meetings, the premier emphasized the need for robust infrastructure, youth empowerment, and investor-friendly policies to achieve this milestone.

 

Key Directives and Initiatives

  • Simplifying Right of Way (RoW) Rules
  • To ensure nationwide broadband expansion, the Prime Minister directed authorities to further simplify existing Right of Way (RoW) regulations. This initiative will accelerate the deployment of fiber optic networks and improve internet services, especially in underserved areas.
  • Youth Training in IT
  • Recognizing the importance of a skilled workforce, Prime Minister Sharif instructed relevant authorities to provide IT training aligned with international standards. This initiative aims to equip Pakistan’s youth with the skills needed to secure high-paying jobs abroad and contribute to the global digital economy.

 

 

  • Visa Facilitation for Foreign Investors
  • To attract global investment, the Prime Minister ordered that visas for foreign businessmen collaborating with Pakistani IT companies be issued within 24 hours. This directive, based on recommendations from the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), is a key step in fostering a business-friendly environment.
  • Boosting Freelancing Opportunities
  • The government aims to increase the number of freelancers from 1.4 million to 2 million within the next two years. Through initiatives like the DigiSkills program, over 300,000 individuals will be trained by June 2025, with the number expected to rise to 900,000 over the subsequent two years.
  • Comprehensive Marketing Strategy
  • The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a global marketing strategy to promote Pakistan’s IT sector. The goal is to position the country as a preferred destination for IT services and software development.

 

Progress and Future Plans

Officials briefed the Prime Minister on current advancements, including efforts to enhance smartphone accessibility, expand broadband services, and improve internet speeds. Discussions also included the formulation of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, which is expected to be approved next month.
