Lahore Set to Launch Five-Tram Service

Lahore, a city rich in cultural heritage and innovation, is poised to transform its public transport system with the introduction of a modern tram service. Following the success of the Orange Line train and Metro bus service, this marks the first-ever tram service in the city.

Project Launch and Vision

The tram project was officially launched at the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) headquarters, with the approval of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The initiative aims to enhance urban mobility and beautify the city, providing residents and tourists with a more efficient means of transportation.

Tram Route and Key Stops

The tram route will span 8.2 km, connecting key areas of Lahore, including:

  • Kalma Chowk
  • Main Boulevard
  • Hussain Chowk
  • MM Alam Road
  • Mini Market

With five trams operating simultaneously, commuters can expect a tram at each stop every two minutes. This service is anticipated to significantly improve travel convenience, easing the burden of traffic congestion and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Integrating Transport Services

The provincial government plans to seamlessly integrate the tram system with existing transport services, ensuring a comprehensive and efficient travel network within the city. The modern tram service is set to elevate Lahore’s public transport infrastructure, contributing to a more organized and user-friendly system.

Future Plans: High-Speed Rail Project

In addition to the tram service, the Punjab government is exploring the possibility of constructing a high-speed railway line between Rawalpindi and Lahore. This ambitious project aims to achieve speeds of 250 km/h, reducing travel time between the two cities to less than two hours. The estimated cost of this venture is approximately $1.6 billion.

However, securing financing for this project poses a challenge, as substantial investment will be required to bring the high-speed rail initiative to fruition.
