Punjab Assembly Approves Significant Salary Hikes Amid Economic Challenges

Punjab Assembly Approves Significant Salary Hikes Amid Economic Challenges

Punjab Ministers , Asssembly and deputy Speaker and MPA Salary increased upto 860%

The Punjab Assembly has approved the Punjab Revision of Salaries of Public Representatives 2024, resulting in substantial increases in the salaries and allowances of lawmakers, ministers, and parliamentary officials. The legislation, passed unanimously during the 19th assembly session presided over by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, aims to align public representatives’ compensation with current economic conditions.

Details of the Salary Increases

The approved bill outlines significant salary hikes across various roles:

  • Provincial Ministers: Increased from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 960,000 (an 860% rise).
  • Punjab Assembly Speaker: Revised from Rs. 125,000 to Rs. 950,000.
  • Deputy Speaker: Boosted from Rs. 120,000 to Rs. 800,000.

  • MPAs: Raised from Rs. 76,000 to Rs. 400,000 (a 426% increase).
  • Parliamentary Secretaries: Increased from Rs. 83,000 to Rs. 451,000.
  • Advisors and Special Assistants to the Chief Minister: Revised from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 665,000.

The speaker defended these adjustments, citing the inadequacy of the 2019 pay structure in the prevailing economic climate. The legislation emphasizes that public representatives’ salaries must be revised periodically under the 1972 Parliamentary Act.

Opposition and Controversy

Opposition leader Ahmad Khan Bachar raised objections to the salary hikes. However, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan termed the legislation a constitutional necessity, ensuring its passage by majority vote.

Resolution on APS Tragedy

In the same session, the Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning the 2014 Army Public School (APS) tragedy. The resolution, moved by PML-N MPA Raheela Khadim Hussein, called for exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of this heinous act. It paid tribute to the martyred teachers and students, emphasizing the nation’s resilience against terrorism.

Economic Implications

While the salary increases address financial adequacy for lawmakers, they come amid Pakistan’s challenging economic landscape. Critics argue that the hikes should be balanced against fiscal constraints, with a focus on broader public welfare.

The Punjab Assembly’s move to revise salaries and allowances reflects the need for fair compensation for public representatives. However, ensuring transparency and prioritizing public welfare remain key considerations for fostering trust and governance in the region.
